"Freedoms Forge"...by Jim Ticehurst (Mountain Lion)

They first Landed upon the Atlantic Shores

Of a brave New Land  that Opened Its Doors..

To The Dreams of those Who Would be Free

Seeking Only Peace and Place of Harmony....

They Came Not wanting a War or to Fight.

Only to Follow the Path of Freedoms Light...

To find a new home and make a Stand

As They Would build a nation and make it Grand ...

Pilgrims, Peasants,Poor or Rich they Came

In Gods Creation They were All The Same...

Creating a Nation Not Ruled by Hate

Following Destiny, Dreams and unknown Fate...

Uniting as a PEOPLE ..That Tyrrany might Fall

They Gathered in Numbers at Independence Hall

A Hand Written Document would Soon Declare..

Liberty and Justice Had Brought them There...

A Continental Army  Joined to Carry the Fight

At Valley Forge....The Fires Burned Bright...

That United The Colonies in a Just Revolution

Creating thier Freedom and a New Constitution..

Those Banners Pass on From Sister and Brother

To Make this GREAT Nation Unlike Any Other ....,.

America was Built on Blood...Sweat...and Tears..

And FREEDOM has Forged her Through All The Years...

Let freedom ring!

Thanks...

Thank you for honoring my ancestor who set sail on "The Abigail" to Plymouth Colony in June, 1635.  Anne was a 32-year-old married woman, a midwife, accompanied by her nine-year old son from a previous marriage; the boy's father had died.  Also on board with her was her second husband, who had also lost his first spouse.  His son from that marriage was with them, as well.  They were part of 220 total passengers (plus livestock) who set sail on a long and arduous four-month voyage to the new world, and by the time they landed the ship was infested with small pox.  Some died during the voyage and were given up to the sea.

Anne's son would grow up and marry a woman in the Colony.  She was tried at Salem on 23 May 1692 and was sentenced to prison. She gave birth to a baby girl while incarcerated and later was given nine pounds as compensation for her "false imprisonment for witchcraft." Their daughter's husband was hanged for wizardry during the Salem Trials on 19 Aug. 1692, based on the testimony of a servant in their household.   I guess that Puritan servant didn't quite understand Quakerism!  The daughter was also found guilty of witchcraft, but was eventually given a reprieve "on account of her peculiar circumstances" or until her baby son could be born. She, too, was eventually given restitution for her prison stay of 150 pounds in 1703.   You may know these two people as John and Elizabeth Proctor, the central characters in Arthur Miller's answer-to-McCarthyism play, "The Crucible", and also described in "The Devil in Massachusetts."

I am thus the proud descendant of a long line of "witches and wizards."  ;)

It was really nice to hear from you..Thank you for commenting on My Poem....and some Very interesting Family History too..!! How fascinating....would make a Great Movie of those times...The Salem witch hunts and what they did to Suspected Witches, wizards etc was Bizarre...Lots of people were killed or imprisoned just because of Rumors or Gossip...I have a black Cat named Shadow...who talks to me in several different tones in the Morning when I get up..I am afraid I would be in Big trouble in the 1600-1700's..

I did My family history too...on My Mothers side.....I now have three Large Note books..One The Finished Work ..and two Work books...it was fairly easy because that side of the family...Roundtrees..AKA~ Rowntrees ...is so well documented ..back to WILLAM...ROWNTREE...and His family...First doicumented in Hanover county, Va...1680....along the James River...He was christened in the same church george and Martha washington were Later Married in..

Three of Williams boys served in the Revolutianary War...Documented..My Line Dudley Roundtree and family went to the new state of kentucky in 1790..along the Green river...up to illinois in 1840...and west by covered Wagon in 1852...I have My Great grandfather PATRICK HENRY ROUNDTREE's autobiography of that trip...

His Fathers wife was one of THE Patrick Henrys cousins...as they grew up with Patrick Henrys family in Hanover county...Va..

I am pround to have such a family Connection to historic events in America...and great Colonists and pioneers..

PS...Don't tell anyone I Italk to Shadow...

of a geneology that was done some time ago as a graduation present.  It traces my lineage back to some signers of the Declaration Of Independence and a whole bunch of folk who came over on that crowded boat, the Mayflower.  However I am most impressed with the several who were hung as witches in Salem; the woman who had the distinction of being Plainfield's first suicide; the woman who was fined for selling fish to the Indians on the Lord's day; the man who went over Niagra Falls in a barrel and of course Pricilla Mullins of "Why don't you speak for yourself, John" infamy - just to name a few.

I was fortunate that the geneology was done by a person who faithfully copied, not only the dates of birth, marriage, death and offspring but also included notes found in the public records, many of which are hilarious.

Great poem - keep them coming.

We might be related!  My ancestor "Anne" that I mentioned above was also tried for witchcraft in 1669 (well before the big purge of 1692) and somehow escaped the noose.  Because she was a midwife and was called on to help out other sick members in the colony, her "healing" skills were deemed to be witchcraft.  Had she not survived, there would be no Cal today.

Have you ever seen a photo of "Gallows Hill?"  Do the Google.

never hear of anyone doing the research to find out they were decended from Mable the bar room floozey or Frank the riveter who built boats.

Me of course can trace a geaneology back to Great Grandpa Hoffman who started the first chain of nickleodeans in Texas.  Or the other one who made uniforms for the confederacy and had his whole business burned by Sherman.

Jews even.

missed my post [above] where I gave several examples of not so great ancestors.  Besides, everyone is related to someone famous - 5 degrees of separation, ya know.  Also, as I wrote, mine was not done to find illustrious forebarers - they just showed up in the search.  The signers were all traced through other's geneologies from some numbnut in mine.

And I forgot to mention that somewhere back in time a Shed married a Backhouse.  I'll see your "Jews" and raise you an Indian.

I am supposedly related to Flora MacDonald on my father's side of the family but don't know for sure.

You notice....I didn't mention my Dads side of the family...I think they were Pirates or  Rum smugglers...most of them were sent to Australia ..thats why there are so many of us down there...LOL..

Cheers...

I've got a bunch of real good rascals and floozies in my family tree.  It seems with every succeeding century, they got a wee bit loonier.   Sometime I'll tell you about the moonshiners...  :)

in the "off-shoot" of my Town  line.

William Town came to America in 1635 - his two daughters were executed for witchcraft.

Along my line was one of them.  Mary Town - executed at the age of 58 for witchcraft 11/22/1692.

Also found this interesting male witch - Captain John Flloyd who came from England in 1636.  He was imprisioned for practicing witchcraft in 1692 but "he escaped conviction."  I guess women made more convincing witches. [snark]

...portrayed my ancestor, John Proctor, in the 1996 feature film version of The Crucible, while actress Joan Allen portrayed his wife, Elizabeth.  According to family lore, Arthur Miller took quite a few liberties with the actual story, and I understand he adapted the screen play as well.

But you are Not Alone...You Alway Have Friends

Got to spend the day with my girlfriend of 38 years and we had a fine time, as we always do.

this beautiful 4th of July card that I received from a Brit friend.  The artist, Jacquie Lawson, is an English woman that I have come to admire for her inventiveness and departure from the banal.

I love the Lawson card and saved it to my favorites.
